The RMS Carpathia


After the Californian, the Carpathia was the closest ship to the Titanic, at 51 miles away. It was the closest ship to hear Titanics distress calls but was over 4 hrs away, too far to save anyone who didnt make it to a lifeboat. At great risk to itself, the Carpathia exceeded its maximum speed through waters full of field ice, growlers and of course Icebergs.

At 4:00 am the Carpathia met the 20 lifeboats and rescued 705 people. The crew and passengers of the Carpathia did all they could to help survivors as much as possible. They arrived in New York days later in the middle of a rain storm. It docked at Cunard's North (a.k.a. Hudson) River Pier #54 The Carpathia was owned by White Stars rival, Cunard. In 1917, it too went to the bottom of the ocean when it was torpedoed by a German submarine.

Earlier in the year a 90 year old woman who saw Titanic dreamed about an old roll of film her late husband took of the Carpathia. It shows Titanic survivors on board the Capathia, Iceberg infested waters at the scene of the disaster, and the Carpathia pulling into New York...
